Command: “Fetch”
Training Steps:
- Introduce the Object: Start with a toy that your dog is interested in. Show it to them, allowing them to sniff and get excited about it.
- Throw the Toy: Toss the toy a short distance while saying “Fetch.” Keep the throws short to maintain your dog’s interest and ensure success.
- Encourage the Return: As your dog grabs the toy, call them back to you using a cheerful voice. You may need to show a treat to encourage them to return.
- Exchange and Reward: When your dog comes back with the toy, ask them to “Drop it” (ensure you’ve taught this command previously), exchange the toy for a treat, and give plenty of praise.
Explanation: “Fetch” is a fantastic way to exercise your dog both mentally and physically. It teaches them to follow commands at a distance and brings out their natural retrieving instincts.
Use Case: “Fetch” is ideal for park visits or backyard playtime, providing a controlled way for your dog to expend energy and practice responsive behaviors even when off-leash.
